L'Amore non fa rumore | 1998

I wanted to take commercial signs and road signs and empty them of their meaning in order to disorient the

overwhelmed spectator. The effect of estrangement is caused by the juxtaposition of a familiar image with an unusual meaning; my luminous signs are not meant to be something different in the city skyline, but to blend into the city, blending in with other lights and signs, provoking in the passer-by a deeper reflection on the religious and symbolic meaning of Christmas. When lit up signs at Christmas speak to me under the falling snow, love makes no noise.

Domenico Luca Pannoli

Domenico Luca Pannoli’s Luce (Light) consists of 37 luminous panels imitating road signs and some famous commercial brands, such as the symbol of a smile instead of a no-parking sign or the words “Love” in the middle of the Esso logo. Between arrows pointing to the future and symbols of peace, stands the inscription

that gives the work its title. The effect of astonishment sought by Pannoli increases when the components of the work are distributed along a street and can more easily be mistaken for normal street signs from a distance, while the invitation to harmony becomes almost literal in cases where the components of the work are concentrated and displayed next to each other. Together with Enrica Borghi’s work, L’amore non fa rumore (Love makes no noise) won the City of Turin’s Luci di Natale (Christmas Lights) competition reserved for young artists and launched on the occasion of the first edition of Luci d’Artista. In 1998, architect and designer Domenico Luca Pannoli (Turin, 1967) founded the ONDESIGN studio and has since exhibited in various national and international urban contexts. In 2014, with L’amore non fa rumore, he participated in the Glow Festival in Eindhoven.
