The artwork is a re-elaboration of a sentence by Gramsci from Quaderni del Carcere, 1930: “The crisis consists precisely in the fact that the old dies and the new cannot be born: in this interregnum the most varied morbid phenomena occur”, thus introducing a reflection on the necessity and urgency of the passage to the new, which however seems to be constantly blocked and suspended between “no longer” and “not yet”. Jaar, transposing the phrase into neon form, emphasises the urgency of illuminating the darkness of history's horrors with culture so that they are not forgotten and above all not repeated.
